Rural property garden care

A rural property is rarely just a garden. There is usually boundary hedging that runs further than anyone expects, mature trees that need proper attention rather than occasional lopping, a lawn that is really closer to grassland, and edges where the garden meets a paddock, a track or open country.

That mix does not suit a fortnightly mow-and-go. It needs a plan across the year, so the right work happens in the right season and nothing quietly gets out of hand.

What that usually involves

• Boundary hedging, cut on a cycle that keeps it thick and stock-proof rather than thin and gappy
• Mature and ornamental trees, pruned for health, shape and safety, at the right time of year for the species
• Orchards and fruit trees, with specialist pruning for both form and crop
• Lawns and rougher grass, managed differently depending on whether it is lawn, orchard floor or paddock edge
• Beds, borders and planting, chosen for exposure, soil and drainage rather than what looked good in a catalogue
• Access and approaches, with drives, verges and entrances kept clear and presentable

Second homes and properties you are not always at

A good number of rural properties around here are not lived in full time. That is exactly where planned care earns its keep: the garden is looked after whether or not anyone is there to notice, and you arrive to it in good order rather than to a fortnight of catching up.

If a garden has already got ahead of you, renovation and revival work brings it back into condition first, and regular visits keep it there afterwards.
